Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

Where to begin. The menu in the room looked and sounded great. When we arrived there was hardly anyone there clue one. We ordered very overpriced margs that were not that good so i switched to beer. We were brought the wrong appetizer clue two. Server explained the specials and the duck came with keno? You mean quinoa yes that's it. Didnt want suck and quinoa at a Mexican restaurant so we ordered the surf and turf special. The meat was good but the sauce whipped potatoes and sautéed veggies dusted with cumin left something to be desired. Even at a ski resort the meal was over priced and lacked quality. Nothing compared to the meal we had the night before for the same price at a slope side bistro. Bottom line maybe stick with the standard Mexican fare ie enchiladas or go elsewhere. I wish I would have shuttled downtown for some better Mexican food.

My group spent close to a grand here and nobody liked anything about dinner. Bad food, bad and slow service.

La Montana gets better with every bite - and it starts off strong to say the least. It's hard to beat the fresh salsa's, their great queso and delisch guacamole with a signature margarita. But then, there is the main course. The camarones are highly acclaimed and the enchiladas are an award-winning dish, but you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. The elk is absolutely outstanding! And then, there's dessert. La Montana's take on bananas foster is nothing short of a bite of heaven.

We've been here 3 or 4 times and the food quality seems to have declined since the last time we were there - about a year ago. The meat quality in the fajitas was tough and awful. The fish tacos were not very good. My margarita was 80% ice. On the plus side, the service was great.
(2)Jennifer D.
Couldn't eat there. They were full so we asked for take put which they normally do, but because they were full they decided against take put orders for the night. Who does that? A great restaurant makes it happen. Then they told us we couldn't sit at the bar with the kid and order anything because of the kid, yet the couple to our right had margaritas and both of their kids were bellied up at the bar.
(1)Michele L.
Food was good but I hate when restaurants get cheap on you charging you $3 for extra enchilada sauce(it would have been dry without ) and extra $3 for sour cream!!! I got the famous chicken enchilada featured on gourmet magazine. Margs were tart and they were cheap on the grand mariner. My daughter got the fajitas which I would get the next time and order wine instead of margs . My family loved the fried ice cream.
(3)P S.
Great, friendly service. Awesome chips with homemade salsa. Great margaritas. Good food.

We had a condo right at the base, and this is really a great location to get to. There is a grocery and liqueur store right next door. If you are at the base, out of this location and two downtown, we would recommend this place. The price was a bit higher than the other local Mexican restaurants, but the food is a bit better and little less traditional then the others. We had a broad range of dinners and everyone had a really good meal. Reservations are recommended, and service is good.

Slow service and expensive but bland food make this a place to avoid. We hadn't been in awhile and quickly remembered why - with 4 tables occupied it took over an hour for our meal to arrive and then the server got the order wrong! The decor is also very well worn and beat up. The margaritas are something they do well but that's it. Also why does a Steamboat restaurant have pictures of Jackson Hole on the walls?
(2)Josh L.
Ate here last year it was great, this year it was not. Carnitas were bland, chicken fajitas undercooked and service was very very poor. It was almost like the waitress thought she was doing us a favor by serving us. We will try somewhere else next time
(2)Hannah R.
Hard to understand the bad reviews, we had a great experience. We were there on a busy ski-season night. Our service was excellent, food came quickly. We had Navajo fry bread as an experiment, and loved it. We then had the pork loin, excellent, and a special of sea scallops, which was the winner of our entire week in Steamboat, and one of the best scallop dishes I've ever had (and I am spoiled, a New Yorker living in a seafood town).
(5)Nate K.
I have only done happy hour.. The margs are good staff is awesome and the happy hour food is great.
(4)Scott N.
Tortilla soup was awesome! Guacamole was pretty good. Burrito suizo was in my top 3 of all time! Maragaritas were very very good but very very expensive too! $16 a drink.

The guests at this restaurant possess a bland palette, so the chef has to tone the food down a lot. He's apparently not any happier with the situation than I was. When I asked for something more intense, the waiter brought out a nice bottle of house-made hot sauce that was smoky and flavorful but still not hot. I asked again and the waiter perked up and told me about chef's special "tough guy" sauce. He brought out a deadly pate drenched in flavor and sinus-clearing burn. I wanted to take it home and cuddle with it afterward. Oh, tough guy. I am yours. Notable: carnitas, enchiladas, and silver margaritas all good. We're probably going back to try the non-tex-mex specialties. Buffalo loin, here I come!

On vacation with friend. Restaurant was recommended so we went in to have some drinks and dinner at the bar. From the start we were treated rudely. Bar was not full and yet the bartender (Benson?) on several occasions told us that he would "get to us".....but he was "so busy". We couldn't see how as he continued to wash glasses in front of us but had no time to take an order or simply check on how we were doing. We're not high maintenance customers at all and decided to give the benefit of the doubt patiently waiting it out and even trying to engage him in polite conversation as he passed us back and forth. There was simply no interest on his behalf in providing even a modest level of service. When he finally did stop by it was the silent treatment with no offer to welcome us, go over the menu, etc. basically we got the "if you're not ready, im too busy to stand here and help you out" attitude and away he went...... We finally gave up and asked to speak to the manager (something I've never done). She basically dismissed us indicating how surprised she was because everyone suppossedly loves this guy. Menu looked interesting, but we unfortunately never got the chance to try it out. If you've got some extra time on your hands and want to be treated rudely, this might be the place for you. The two stars are for the Packer game being on in the bar and the Happy Hour margaritas. The happy hour menu was NOT good. Everything but the quesadilla were disappointing and downright didn't taste good. We shared the burrito plate or taco plate with the machaca beef and we should have just ordered that because it was huge and delicious. Unfortunately for the price and service it was not memorable (or memorable in a bad way). Way overpriced. Unfortunately it was the only restaurant within walking distance from our hotel and our hotel shuttle wasn't operating yet so we took the chance. Will not make that mistake again. Their clientele is the wealthy cabin owners in the area but I can't imaging paying $15 for a burrito anywhere. Will not be returning and I would warn anyone who's thinking about going there because it's close to think again. Just take the free bus downtown and enjoy a night out!
(2)Bill B.
Everything we ate was excellent. A bit pricey. With $14 margs and entrees up to $34.
(4)Brian L.
Not your typical mexican restaraunt so if you want tacos and burriots go elsewhere. But i had buffalo short ribs and stuffed shrimp and it was amazing. very good sangria as well
(4)Phil J.
Went back to La Montana August 25 - the place was nearly deserted, as was the resort area of Steamboat -- back-to-school blues apparently. La Montana has always been one of the best Mex restaurants ever. Tonight had the pork tenderloin with polenta. It was perfectly delicious. Margaritas are perfect too. Always love this place.
(5)Brandi L.
Fortunately, we did not have the same service as Liz W.; our waitress was very personable and attentive, and was willing to help with several recommendations. Overall, the food and service were good and I would probably go back, however, I do agree that it is over priced for what it is.
(3)Rob G.
Very good food for a medium nice casual restaurant. Prices at $36 per entree seem too high for what is offered Low points of meal are chips (like store bought) and they use sour mix (not fresh lime juice) for margaritas. But overall it is a solid good to very good and we had a good time.
(3)Saffron M.
The food was perfectly good here- actually amazingly good salmon, perfectly cooked, and the blue corn enchiladas were delicious. I don't like to complain about prices, especially since we knew it was more of an upscale place, but I have to say, this place IS overpriced, hence the three stars. My margarita was really skimpy- tiny glass full of ice and a shot of liquid (although good), and the food portions were small, even for me who gets grossed out by oversized portions. The place was not even half full on a Sunday night. Loved the host- cool guy, very knowledable about the area's geography. Try it, but be prepared for a little stinginess.
(3)Liz W.
Horrible service and way over-priced. We headed to La Montana for some birthday festivities, and we left completely offended. Our entrees never arrived, and our waitress basically ignored us completely. I understand that people can have an off-night, but we were a completely low-maintenence table of 8. The waitress easily could have banked on our group, but we asked to cancel the entrees after waiting an hour and being completely ignored. Word on the street is that they have new owners- so I would avoid the place at all costs.
(1)Ken M.
This was the last day of our trip and i thought our best meal was yesterday (at the ore house) but this place was great. Yes it was pricey but the food was awesome 5 stars in my book.
(5)Nick A.
The food is overpriced for what is received. The quality of food and preparation is below standard for a restaurant of this supposed caliber. I have eaten here off and on for years but have made my last visit. The service is equally as bad as the food. Do not waste your time and money.
(1)Jennifer M.
I've only been here for happy hour, so I can't comment on the food. This review is based solely on happy hour visits. But the chips & guacamole are delicious, and you can't beat their tasty 2-for-1 margaritas during happy hour. Great way to have a few drinks without completely breaking the bank to do so.
(5)Joe R.
I've been going to La Montana since 1995. This was our first visit since 2008 and we were very disappointed. The prices were higher, portions smaller and service worse. The quality of a $38 ribeye was terrible reflecting a poor cut of meat. The sauce on the SW Enchiladas tasted like Ragu. Sadly, I will not return.
(1)Jessica V.
Service was *meh* (not particularly fast, personable) - especially when my husband had to send back a piece of pork tenderloin that was (ew) pink and undercooked. The waiter couldn't have cared less. Food was also *meh* given that they bill themselves as award winning Mexican. Way overpriced. Enchiladas should not be $21. Sorry.

Truly great food. Top shelf margs were a little sweet for me, but at least they make their own sweet n sour with organic lemons. The Navajo fry bread was awesome! Camarones de Montana were awesome! Tomato soup of the day was unique....and awesome! Service was a tad bit slow, but anyone with an ounce of patience wouldn't bat an eye. In reality it's a 4 star joint but I'm throwing down 5 for the 3.5 star injustice.
(5)Allen C.
Bar is great! When we had dinner waiter had a serious attitude. Argued with most of the people in our group and not at all flexible. Was very confrontational! Food was good, a bit overpriced, but you are paying for place right next to resort.

We like the items we saw on the menu for La Montana so even though it was middle of the road for reviews we decided to give them a chance. I think that they have some good elements and some areas for improvement so they get three stars overall, but lets break it down a little bit. Food Creativity - 4 Stars The special was a Anaheim pepper stuffed with crab meet, shrimp and Monterey jack cheese. The bread this in panko and then deep fry it to give it a great crust. This was a great dish, there was good portions of crab and shrimp in the chili, so this dish got great marks. I got a single serving of the shrimp that is stuffed with crab and then wrapped in bacon. This was good, but I found the flavor of the bacon over powered the other two, more subtle flavored ingredients. The Jalapeño Hollandaise Sauce was also good and was on both dishes, but it could use just a little more heat to it so that you realize that you are having mexican food. Salsa - 2 Stars They serve two different kinds of salsa, but neither one had much heat to it. The red salas was my preference of the two, but I could skip them entirely. The chips were light and crisp. Drinks - 2 Stars Was there any alcohol in my Margarita. At $10.50 for a Margarita I want there to be some tequila in it. We ordered to different types of Margarita and with both we felt the same way. Service - 3 Stars We had alright service but it was not a busy night. I could see where this could be a challenge if the restaurant was full. The had more staff than necessary at the hostess stand and bar, as these two people were standing around watching the Tour De France on the television. There was a busser and two waiters, but the second waiter only had one table the full time we were there. Kind of strange, but I do not own the place. If you are looking for creative southwestern food then give this a try. You will probably have some good food, but do not get too excited beyond that.
(3)Thomas G.
Salsa Verde is top notch and chips are fresh and warm My partner had the jumbo shrimp stuffed with crab meat and jack cheese, wrapped in bacon and drizzled with a jalapeño hollandaise reduction (Camerones de Montana) while I enjoyed the red chili pasta with shrimp and cream Cadillac Margarita was tasty and loaded with top shelf liquor Service was attentive and we will return soon
(5)Maria S.
This is our second year back and we still love this place! The staff is super attentive and the food is amazing! Everything is very fresh and made in house! The margaritas are awesome!
(5)M V.
Great service by Chris. The food was great, food presentation was up to par. We were here around a year ago and the changes done have made this location and upscale restaurant. Great ambient, great service and the suggestion to get the chefs choice definitely put them over the top as great restaurant. Being a food aficionado and eating at different restaurant around the world. I will grade "La Montaña" as one of the best or the best Mexican restaurant in Steamboat. Enjoy!
(5)Robyn S.
I would NEVER recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Steamboat. There are far more better restaurants to try. Let me start out by saying that the service by Pete, the older grey haired man was HORRIBLE! He hit my mother in the face with a plate of hot food and barely apologized or made sure she was alright. Food was so bland, no flavor to it whatsoever. The salsa was watered down and not spicy to begin with. Hello?!?! This is supposed to be a MEXICAN restaurant. He brought to the table COLD tortillas with the queso fundido which was supposed to have chorizo in it. It had NONE! Who eats cold tortillas anyways? Do not order the pork carnitas!!! NO FLAVOR to this dish. It was so bad that we just left our UN eaten food, paid the bill and went back to The Highmark and ordered pizza. Yes, the food was THAT BAD. How does this place even consider itself a "Mexican Restaurant"?
(1)Russ P.
Glen is the best bartender in town! Eat at the bar during happy hour and enjoy saving some money, excellent food and conversation with Glen.

We have been coming to Steamboat for over 20 years and think of La Montana as one of the stalwarts. They have shown remarkable consistency in both the quality of their food and the professionalism of their longtime wait staff. Lots of restaurants in town have come and gone, but La Montana has been one if the few "steady Eddies" with a great bar and killer Margaritas. If you're coming to town, La Montana has to be on your list.
(5)American E.
The service was shabby. The prices are high. The food was bland. There are way better, cheaper options out there. I had the chicken mole and it tasted like my wife made it. It had no flavor and the chicken was tough and chewy. Go to Fiesta Jalisco and chow down.
(1)Mark N.
This restaurant used to be one of the best. Something has happened and is now not much better than any other dive taco joint. Food looked like it was prepared by an amateur. Way over priced for what you get. Mole Did not taste homemade and when I asked for more for my chicken because there was barely enough to cover the chicken, I received a small ramekin half full. Then I noticed I was charged $2 for it when paying the bill. Had a far superior meal at Canyons in town.
(2)Bernarda A.
The food was excellent. It was well seasoned, prepared, and presented. The staff was attentive. The service was well timed - especially considering that we had hungry tween boys with us. Our only complaint is that they will not split the bills up for parties sitting together.

I've only been here for happy hour, so I can't comment on the food. This review is based solely on happy hour visits. But the chips & guacamole are delicious, and you can't beat their tasty 2-for-1 margaritas during happy hour. Great way to have a few drinks without completely breaking the bank to do so.

Sorry.

Not your typical mexican restaraunt so if you want tacos and burriots go elsewhere. But i had buffalo short ribs and stuffed shrimp and it was amazing. very good sangria as well

Fortunately, we did not have the same service as Liz W.; our waitress was very personable and attentive, and was willing to help with several recommendations. Overall, the food and service were good and I would probably go back, however, I do agree that it is over priced for what it is.

Very good food for a medium nice casual restaurant. Prices at $36 per entree seem too high for what is offered Low points of meal are chips (like store bought) and they use sour mix (not fresh lime juice) for margaritas. But overall it is a solid good to very good and we had a good time.

I have only done happy hour.. The margs are good staff is awesome and the happy hour food is great.

Everything we ate was excellent. A bit pricey. With $14 margs and entrees up to $34.

This was the last day of our trip and i thought our best meal was yesterday (at the ore house) but this place was great. Yes it was pricey but the food was awesome 5 stars in my book.

The food is overpriced for what is received. The quality of food and preparation is below standard for a restaurant of this supposed caliber. I have eaten here off and on for years but have made my last visit. The service is equally as bad as the food. Do not waste your time and money.
